ARATA’S WORSHIP, POMILIO’S SCIENCE MEET IN MUSEUM

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Michael Arata’s “Chapel of Mary’s Parents” and the geometrical drawings of Mark Pomilio are now on exhibit at Cal State San Bernardino. The two exhibits, displayed in the university’s Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum, run through July 29. A reception for these exhibits as well as for the 36th annual student exhibition will be held June 15 at 5 p.m. in the museum.

Arata, a Los Angeles-based artist, is sharing his witty and playful installation work – a rendition of an urban place of worship. “Chapel of Mary’s Parents” explores icons and relics designed to reinforce the relevant practice of ceremonial worship. With plastic aliens, rabbits’ feet, T-shirts, magic wands, and dirty white flowers he depicts creation, virginity, an image of the family nucleus and the concepts of magic and luck.

Arata has exhibited at many venues, including shows at the Acuna-Hansen Gallery in Los Angeles, the Abel Joseph Gallery in Brussels and the Museo ItaloAmericano in San Francisco.

Mark Pomilio’s powerful large-size charcoal drawings are inspired by the scientific images of growth patterns. They emphasize the impact of science on modern life and are installed in the Nancy and George Ellis Gallery’s church-like space.

“The medium of drawing has recently experienced a significant increase in popularity,” says Eva Kirsch, director of the Fullerton Art Museum since 1998. Its immediate, personal, often subjective and intimate quality made it a primary medium of many of today’s artists. Mark Pomilio is one of them.

A Texas-based artist, Pomilio has shown works across the United States and abroad, including displays in France, Italy, Louisiana and Texas.

Admission for the exhibit and reception is free. The Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum is located on the east end of the CSUSB Visual Arts Building, next to parking Lot M on the CSUSB campus. Parking is $3 per vehicle in Lots M, A, B and L ($4 after June 30). The museum is open Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and is closed Sunday and Monday.
